Breastfeeding May Prevent Postpartum Smoking Relapse

Smokers who gave up the habit during pregnancy smoked less postpartum if they breastfed for at least 90 days compared with other women who did not breastfeed or breastfed for shorter periods, according to a study in Nicotine & Tobacco Research. Breastfeeding was the only predictor of change in smoking behaviors. The authors suggest supporting women through at least 3 months of breastfeeding and educating them about its effectiveness. Predictors of changes in smoking from 3rd trimester to 9 months postpartum.
